Who is eligible to apply for an elective at MUHAS?

Undergraduate or postgraduate students from universities outside MUHAS pursuing studies in medicine, nursing, midwifery, dentistry, medical laboratory sciences, pharmacy, medical radiography, biomedical engineering, public health, physiotherapy, audiology, speech-language pathology, or occupational therapy. Undergraduate students must be in their clinical rotation years.

How do I apply for an elective program at MUHAS?

Applying for an elective program at MUHAS is simple:

  • Visit our Online Application Page
  • Complete the application form with your personal details
  • Select your preferred department(s) and duration of stay
  • Upload your required documents (reference letter from Dean/Principal and transcript)
  • Submit your application at least three (3) months before your intended start date

Are there any fees for the elective program?

Yes, elective students are required to pay program fees except for those coming under an exchange programme with provision. The fee structure is available on our application page. Payment details will be provided after your application is reviewed and accepted.

Do I get paid or receive financial aid?

No, MUHAS does not provide financial aid or remuneration for elective students.

Do I need a visa to study at MUHAS?

Yes, elective students must apply for an entry visa before arrival. Details and the application process can be found at Tanzania Immigration Services.

Does MUHAS provide accommodation?

No, MUHAS does not offer on-campus accommodation for elective students. Students should arrange private accommodation via Airbnb or other housing services.

How do I get from Julius Nyerere International Airport to MUHAS?

Students can use:

  • Ride-sharing services (Uber, Bolt, or Faras)
  • Taxis (Available at the airport, negotiate fares before entering)
Can I get a SIM card upon arrival?

Yes, there are different mobile networks available in Tanzania such as Vodacom, Airtel, MixbyYass, TCCL and Halotel that you can register at the mobile network shops available in different areas. A passport or travel document is required for registration.

But also, when you arrive at MUHAS the Internationalization and Convocation Unit assists students in obtaining a SIM card.

Where can I exchange money or withdraw cash?

Students can:

  • Withdraw from ATMs available around MUHAS and other areas within the city.
  • Use Bureau de Change services for currency exchange
What is the duration of the elective study?

Elective programs range from two weeks to two years, depending on the student's preference and program requirements. You can specify your preferred duration when you apply online.

Can I choose more than one department?

Yes, elective students can rotate in more than one department, depending on their stay duration.

What food options are available on campus?

MUHAS has multiple cafeterias offering affordable local meals starting from 1 USD. Additionally, nearby supermarkets and restaurants provide various cuisines, including Swahili, Indian, Chinese, and Italian.

Are there any extracurricular activities at MUHAS?

Yes, MUHAS offers sports and recreation, including football, volleyball, basketball, and the annual Fun Run. Students can also access the MUHAS library, one of Tanzania's top biomedical and health sciences libraries.

Through different departments and units, the university organizes learning events i.e the Convocation Symposium, and the MUHAS Digital Health Week.

Yes, elective students receive a Certificate of Completion from MUHAS upon successfully finishing their elective placement upon request.
