The core functions of the Department of Ophthalmology, a founder member of the College of Ophthalmology, of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA), are training undergraduate and postgraduate students in managing conditions and diseases affecting the eye, conducting research and providing high quality public services expected of a university institution. Several collaborative links between the Department and international partners exist, including a vision 2020 link with St Thomas & Guys Hospital in UK; Munster Eye Hospital in Germany, Japanese Eye Medical Team, Sightsavers Tanzania, Mobileeyes Tanzania, Fred Hollows Foundation, COECSA, and Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT). Activities with collaborating institutions include student and staff exchange, skills training for staff and postgraduates, outreach eye services and collaborative research. Outreach eye care services have been provided in the regions of Singida, Manyoni ,Kondoa, Mafia, Kilwa, Mkuranga, Kasulu, Kibondo ,Ruangwa and in Zanzibar; and help bridge the National Hospital with the regional and district hospitals and the community. Eye care services offered at the department includes: Cataract Surgery including Phacoemulsification, orbital surgeries, Glaucoma surgeries, Diabetic retinopathy screening programme, LASER treatment, children eye care  and surgeries, retinal evaluation using OCT, low vision assessment and refractive services.
