Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health

The Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health is one of the nineteen departments of the School of Medicine supporting the mission of the School. Currently, the Department has a total of 21 academic members of staff inclusive of those with honorary positions. We offer mental health graduate and postgraduate studies including psychiatry and clinical psychology. We also work with Muhimbili National Hospital in providing state of art inpatient and outpatient clinical services, research, consultancy and other outreach services. The department maintains links and collaborations with various international and local partners in conducting socio-behavioral research and health programs. The research interests in the Department are wide ranging across the broad spectrum of the mental health field including; behavioral and psychosocial interventions, gender and youth, violence, health economy, women’s mental health, psychology, health systems strengthening and service delivery, HIV/AIDS prevention and response, health promotion and drug abuse. The department offers short courses on qualitative research methods, advance sexual and gender based violence, comprehensive management of substance abuse, stress management, Provider initiated testing and counseling and stigma training. We also offer elective studies for local and international students in the department topical areas.
