Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

The department of Paediatrics and Child Health at MUHAS is one of the core clinical departments at MUHAS. Over 80% of the Paediatricians in Tanzania have been trained in this department. The department has a total of 11 permanent well trained academic staff with a wide range of teaching, clinical and research experience. The department works closely with the department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Muhimbili National Hospital, which is the University’s teaching hospital. The department is currently offering medical undergraduate training, Masters of Medicine (MMed.) in Paediatrics and Child Health (A three years program) and Masters of Science (MSc) in Paediatrics Haemato-Oncology (A two years program). These undergraduate and postgraduate programs are based on competence based curricula with emphasis on skills training.   The department also receives and train international elective students whose number has progressively and significantly increased in the last 5 years. These students mainly come from Japan, Britain, United States of America, Canada, Australia, Austria, Botswana, Kenya, China, Scotland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ghana and Belgium. The department enjoys extensive multidisciplinary, local, regional and international research collaboration as well as non-research collaborations with local and international organisations including but not limited to: Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW); Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC); Paediatrics Association of Tanzania (PAT); World Health Organisation (WHO); Ifakara Health Institute (IHI); Management for Developments in Health; UNICEF; All Medical schools and colleges in Tanzania; University of Nairobi, Kenya; Mie University, Japan; Harvard School of Public Health, USA; Boston Children’s Hospital, USA; Dartmouth University, USA
The department is committed to address child health care challenges in Tanzania and beyond by providing systemic solutions through quality training, learning, research and consultancy. To this end the department is working very closely with all stakeholders in order to improve child survival and development.
