Department of Ophthalmology

Welcome to the department of ophthalmology at (MUHAS) which is also form part of the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), a teaching hospital for MUHAS and a National referral hospital for the country serving a population of about 4.5 Million inhabitants of the Dar es salaam City and nearby regions.

The core functions of the department is to train undergraduate and postgraduate students in ophthalmology ,conduct research and to provide high quality services to the public expected of a university institution. The post-graduate training is a 3 year residency course, open for both nationals and international students. Currently there are six residents and we expect 7 new residents to join soon for the year 2013/14.

The eye department is one of the founder members of College of Ophthalmology, Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA) which strives to improve the quality of training and increase the number of eye care health workers in the region.

The department links/collaborates with various partners locally and internationally. These include St Thomas & Guys Hospital in UK which is a vision 2020 link, Munster eye Hospital in Germany, Japanese eye Medical Team, Sightsavers Tanzania and CCBRT. The activities include student and staff exchange, skills training for staff and residents and collaborative research.

The department runs outreach eye care services with the purpose of providing high quality eye care service to those areas which are poor and with limited eye care services .The outreaches are done in collaboration with eye care partners like Fred Hollows Foundation, COECSA, Sightservers and Mobileeyes Tanzania.

Eye care services offered at the department includes: Cataract Surgery including Phacoemulsification, orbital surgeries, Glaucoma surgery, Diabetic retinopathy screening programme, LASER treatment, children eye care  and surgery, retinal evaluation using OCT, low vision assessment and refractive services.
