The Department of Pathology which includes both the Histopathology and Morbid Anatomy as well as Clinical Chemistry (Chemical Pathology) Units is the forms the backbone of Undergraduate as well as Postgraduate Medical training at MUHAS. The Department initially also clustered the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department which is now autonomous but working very closely with us. Pathology is the main bridge between basic sciences and clinical disciplines and also takes a leading role in diagnostic laboratory services. The department is involved in training various programmes across the University including medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, medical laboratory scientist and radiotherapy technologists at undergraduate level as well as to multiple medical specialization degree programmes. It also works very closely with the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) to provide a major share of healthcare as well as providing legal medicine expertise to the Police Force and the Judiciary. The department has research and training collaborations with Sida (AIDS malignancies), UCSF (Cancer surveillance) and now we are establishing links with the University of Bergen in renal pathology and extra-pulmonary TB. The department also offers consultancy services to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) mainly through the Unit of Diagnostic Services and the Department of Human Resources Development. Furthermore, in the area of cancer care and surveillance we work very closely with the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) alongside MNH. Lastly but not lastly, the Department of Pathology is proud to have produced the current Vice-Chancellor.
